How it works

Practise the way investigators work.

Read the evidence, make the call, and find out what your reasoning got right.

Inside a case

Every case follows the same discipline.

  1. Read the evidence.

Records arrive in stages, as they would in a live case. You work only with what is known at each point.

  2. Make the call.

Reconcile, trace and decide what the evidence supports. Answers lock once you submit.

  3. Get feedback.

See what you did well and what to improve, with the reasons behind each point.

Your options

Start where it suits you.

These are options, not compulsory steps.

  1. Free

    Try the Demo

The Maya case: one case, six questions and a personal performance review.

  2. £99

    Work a live case

The Live Investigation Simulation: choose a case-specific role in a team before the session, then spend two hours working through a live investigation and make a group decision, with a practitioner guiding the room.

  3. Programmes

    Build breadth, then go further

Applied's 20 cases build breadth. Advanced follows, through Applied (Route 1) or with relevant experience (Route 2).

What we assess

Every case is assessed against Fraudlyst's five core skills. This is what good looks like for each.

Interpreting evidence
Say what each record shows, and what it does not.
Reconciling and tracing funds
Follow the money in and out, and make the figures add up.
Separating allegations from findings
Keep what someone claims apart from what the evidence supports.
Escalating within your authority
Act on what you find, at the right time and to the right person.
Recording a clear rationale
Write down why you decided, so someone else can follow it.

Feedback is based on reasoning: it explains why a decision holds up against the evidence, or why it doesn't. The Demo gives you a score out of 9, private to you.

Your process is assessed, not just your answer

In Applied and Advanced, you will request evidence, decide what to look at next, write case notes and justify your decisions. Each step will be recorded, so your assessment and your Record of Skills reflect how you reasoned, not just where you ended up.

Built so your own work is what counts

Each learner will get their own version of a case, with different names, amounts and timelines. Evidence will respond to the choices you make, and follow-up questions will ask why you made them. The only way through a case is to investigate it yourself.

Reviewed submissions

In Applied, two pieces of your work are reviewed by experienced practitioners, who give you written feedback on what you did well, what to improve and why.

  • The midpoint checkpoint: one case submitted in full, halfway through, to check your method.
  • The final case review: your last case, submitted in full, to show how far your method has come.

In Advanced, four extensively assessed submissions are reviewed by experienced practitioners: Cases 5, 10 and 15, and your capstone investigation: a complete investigation you work on your own, from brief to recommendation.

In Applied and Advanced, every case is assessed using AI-assisted assessment and reviewed by experienced practitioners. How the Applied reviews work and how the capstone works.

Who reviews your work

We are building a team of experienced practitioners from across the fraud field. It could include fraud investigators, counter-fraud specialists, financial investigators, forensic accountants, fraud risk managers, internal auditors, intelligence analysts, digital forensics analysts, and compliance and money laundering reporting officers, among others. Legally qualified practitioners will check every case that relies on UK law.

Every reviewer will be vetted and background checked before joining. Wherever possible, your work goes to practitioners with hands-on experience of that kind of case. Every reviewer assesses against the same five core skills, and we check reviews against each other so the standard stays consistent.

Your Record of Skills

When you finish Applied or Advanced, you will receive a Record of Skills: your work case by case, what you did well, what to improve, the skills you showed and your reviewed submissions. In Advanced, it also shows every capstone attempt and your capstone outcome.

You will be able to share it with a verification code. You decide who gets a code, and whether it shows a summary or your full record, including every attempt. You can withdraw a code at any time.

Records will be issued when Applied and Advanced open. Terms apply.

How we build our cases

Every case is built from patterns seen in real investigations.

Every Simulation, Applied and Advanced case will be reviewed before release by our team of experienced practitioners, including legally qualified practitioners where it relies on UK law. Reviewers check that the evidence holds together, the roles are realistic and the questions can be answered.

The Maya case has been through our practitioner review.
